## The Name, the Trademark, and the Identity Question

The divergence of **Tang Soo Do** from the official **Moo Duk Kwan** created a legal and identity conflict that persists to this day. Because the Moo Duk Kwan name, **Hwang Kee's** fist logo, and the organization's registered marks are federally registered trademarks in the United States, owned by Hwang Kee's successor organizations, independent Tang Soo Do schools that include "Moo Duk Kwan" in their names have faced legal challenges.

The official **Moo Duk Kwan** position is unambiguous: **"Soo Bahk Do® Moo Duk Kwan®** — Authorized Moo Duk Kwan schools teach **Soo Bahk Do**, formerly Tang Soo Do (and earlier Hwa Soo Do). The Tang Soo Do martial art system developed by Hwang Kee was an early precursor to his more advanced Soo Bahk Do system developed years later... schools who are not chartered members of \[the official organization\] and continue to use the name Tang Soo Do after 1995 are no longer associated with the Moo Duk Kwan."

Independent Tang Soo Do practitioners contest this framing on historical grounds, arguing that the art they teach predates Soo Bahk Do, was legitimately transmitted to them through direct **lineage** from Hwang Kee's Moo Duk Kwan, and that the official organization's claim to sole legitimacy is institutional rather than historical. **The World Tang Soo Do Association** and similar organizations maintain that their art is a genuine continuation of the tradition Hwang Kee built — not an inferior or incomplete precursor.

Notably, Hwang Kee himself offered a more pluralistic framing in his writings. In his 1970 text **Soo Bahk Do Dae Gahm**, he expressed belief in **"Ryu Pah"** — the concept of a river flowing down a mountain and naturally dividing. Under this philosophy, Tang Soo Do, Soo Bahk Do, and **Taekwondo** are all legitimate streams from the same source. He also accepted **Dan Bon** numbers from practitioners who had received their **black belts** at other **kwans** — suggesting he viewed the Moo Duk Kwan family broadly rather than restrictively.
